ARVO

Cette fois-ci c'est le tour de Deniz de partir en congrès: ARVO est une grande réunion de scientifiques travaillant sur la rétine qui a lieu à Fort Lauderdale, une petite ville maritime à côté de Miami.
This time it's Deniz's turn to go on a scientific meeting: it's the big annual meeting of scientists working on the retina that takes place at Fort Lauderdale- a small beach town close to Miami- that brings her to the other side of the country


Fort Lauderdale c'est bien pour ceux qui aiment la plage, les palmiers et les bateaux de luxe.
Fort Lauderdale is a place for those who like the beach, the palm trees and luxury boats













Même si je ne suis pas grande fan de la plage et des palmiers, c'etait tout de même agréable de respirer l'air chaud de la Floride avec les collègues du labo. La chaleur nous manque tous à Berkeley. Le congrès était très bien aussi.
Although I'm not a big fan of the beach and the palm trees, it was relaxing to be in this landscape with my lab mates and breathe the hot Florida air. Heat is something we all miss in the Bay Area. I've also enjoyed my first ARVO!








Après la mer des Caraïbes, le petit a aussi eu l'occasion se baigner dans l'Atlantique.
This way, our baby also had a chance to swim in the Atlantic ocean after the Caribbean sea

Même si le manger n'était globalement pas très bon en Floride, les crabes valaient le détour
Even though the food in Florida wasn't very good overall, the crabs were worth trying

Hammock / Hamac

Le petit bébé grossit, et sa maman a un peu de mal à le porter, ça lui fait mal au dos. Heureusement on a ramené un joli hamac du Mexique, dans lequel Deniz se repose tous les soirs.
Our baby is getting big! this new weight in the belly is giving his mom a little back pain lately. That's why we're so glad to have brought a hammock from Mexico that we installed in our living room. It turns out it's the best remedy for back aches!

Notre hamac est fabriqué a partir de sisal, un cactus agave voisin de celui qui sert à faire la téquila.
Here is what this hammock is made of: the same sort of cactus that is used in making Tequila. It's called sisal.

Yuri Gagarin

Simge est de retour!!! Voila un mois elle nous rendait visite. Pour notre plus grand bonheur elle revient déjà nous revoir... mais pour 24h seulement (!).
Simge is back!!! One month after her previous visit she's back in the bay area and we're so happy to have her back even if it's only for 24 hours!!!

En route pour la fête de Yuri Gagarin à bord de la Saab décapotable de Luc. Il y a 50 ans Yuri volait dans l'espace, aujourd'hui la NASA organise sur son site un grand festival d'art, sciences et musique électronique (avec notamment Amon Tobin).
On the road for Yuri's night: a special event organized to celebrate the 50th anniversary of Yuri Gagarin's launch to space. The celebration takes place at NASA Ames Research center and consists of arts, science shows and talks accompanied by electronic music performances (such as Amon Tobin). We go there in Luc's convertible Saab enjoying the warm Californian spring day with lots of sun.

Mexico 8: Tulum

On rejoint la mer des Caraibes à Tulum, une petite ville côtière très hippie et relax où on passera deux jours dans un "hôtel" situé sur la plage.
We return to the Caribbean sea at Tulum, a small coastal town, quite laid back and hippie where we pass two days at a "hotel" on the beach.
Notre petit cabanon (celui du milieu) sans eau ni électricité.
Here is our little cabin devoid of luxuries like running water or electricity.


L'interieur du cabanon, avec notre lit suspendu et sa moustiquaire, qui tient plutot lieu de "sablière" en fait, vu tout ce que le vent nous ramenait de la plage.
Inside the little cabin with our suspended bed and its fly screen. The fly screen served mostly as a sand screen to stop the sandy winds from burying us in sand while we were sleeping.

Tulum possède une des rares cité maya construites sur l'océan (On a oublié de la prendre en photo, celle-ci a été prise sur internet).

Et voilà, après ces deux jours à Tulum on a rejoint Playa del Carmen, mais on n'a pas pris de photos, car ça ne nous a pas plu du tout (plein de touristes américains et européens tout rouges qui se bourrent la gueule la nuit et décuitent en brûlant sur la plage le lendemain). Une seule nuit a Playa del Carmen puis direction l'aéroport de Cancun. Et oui 10 jours déjà, notre voyage prend fin :(
So there it is, after two days in Tulum, we return to Playa del Carmen, where we didn't take any pictures (we didn't like this place much: it was very touristic with almost no local people and suffered from all the dullness of a mass tourism town). After only one night spent in Playa del Carmen we catch a bus to bring us to the airport in Cancun. Yep, 10 days flew by and time to get back already :(
