Frisco

Second weekend with grandparents: we go to San Francisco and surroundings.
View over the Golden Gate with the typical fog and cold wind atmosphere.

Then a little hike to Point Bonita still in the cold wind.

We get a little bit of calm during lunch time in Sausalito, in the rich little town where the weather is more pleasant.
Then we return to Frisco around Alamo square full of Victorian houses.

Yosemite

First weekend with grandparents: we go to Yosemite.

We had a good time in our ski lodge.

Ozan discovers snow (he hadn't seen any since he was too young to remember).
Papy aussi (mais là ça se voit).
Grandpa too discovers snow (and actually looks like he likes it).

A toute berzingue!
Ozan is struck by the size of the mountains.

Road trip day 4: Mojave - Bakersfield

Fourth day of our road trip. We slept in a miserable hotel in Baker, a little town situated on the side of the highway between Los Angeles and Las Vegas where the only point of interest is the Mojave reserve. Two perpendicular highways, 5 motels and that many gas stations sums up Baker.

We hit the road for the desert, watching out for turtles!

We make a first stop at the Cima Dome to admire the Joshua trees in the freezing cold (it was snowing at that time!). The Joshua trees are very typical of around here.

Then we get away from the dome and the cold.

Et on va randonner vers le "Hole in the wall" (trou dans le mur).
And hike towards what they call "Hole in the Wall".

And to finish off we pass by the Kelso dunes.

And here is the last picture of the desert before we go back home.
Ten hours of driving awaits us so we decide to split the ride in two and stop at Bakersfield. We though that Bakersfield was a boring little suburban town without much to offer and that it would just be a rest area for us. We found out on the way there that Bakersfield (a favorite stop of Kerouac on his way to San Francisco to earn some cash) has many hidden treasures! The first of the treasures is that it has a big basque community for more than a century. We dined that night in a great basque restaurant called Pyrenees Cafe, where we thought we were really in basque country in the middle of the US. We ate at one of those large communal tables where we were seated with people of all ages with the nicest waitresses and amazing portions of delicious basque food was served to us. We ordered two dishes and our table was suddenly full of a dozen plates which we could not finish but were glad to take with us in our icebox.
Another hidden jewel of Bakersfield is great country music. Bakersfield is one of the country music capitals of the world along with Nashville Tennessee and Texas. Every weekend musicians play in every bar in town. That evening we even had the chance to see Corentin play guitar.
We head back to Berkeley the next day. We've come full circle with 2300 km more on our counter.
